That’s the game we are playing now in family..
(I have created monsters..I think)
Like all good education, I taught my children the yellow car game today. For those who live in total denial, the rule of the game is that every time you see a yellow car, you’re allowed to hit the person you’re with. From then on, my kids saw ONLY yellow cars on the road. The day before, if we go by the odds, there were probably the same number of yellow cars per 100 cars as there are today, but TODAY, that’s all they see, while yesterday, yellow cars were kept in the shadow.
Why is that?
Because their brains, given a new element (me as the world’s best parent who showed them the rules of life with the yellow cars game so they could become better citizens), decided to treat this information as a priority and so went into search mode for it in their environment.
The beauty of this is you can trick your brain to see whatever you want him to see.
Today, I can write an email to sell something in an average of 26 minutes with something to say EVERY day…
What happens after 26 minutes?
Nothing..
I’m done with the selling process.
Is it because I’m better than the others?
Not necessarily…
As Abraham Lincoln said:
“If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first four hours sharpening the axe.”
There’s a hyper-important preparation aspect to this. I told my brain to capture all the elements in my day as small as it is, as unimportant as it is, to pay attention to that.
Then, with a data capture mechanism in place, I keep those elements there for when I’m writing my emails. For myself, I just open the notes application on my Iphone and I write it down the information.
As soon as I open my laptop to write an email, I pull out an idea and start pressing keys on my keyboard one after the other until I reach 26 minutes.
A few corrections, then send.
