I’ve seen shiny object syndrome HIT hard outside the internet marketing space in far darker corners:
In 2018, I decided to get up one morning and book a plane ticket to Ukraine.
What, Ukraine! Who goes there! Oh. oh… tone it down with me. Actually, I wanted to go to Russia, but apparently people need some weird thing called a …visa to get there, so I went to Ukraine. It’s a good thing, because that’s where I come from, although I don’t speak the language. I only ate Varenyky every Christmas, which my grandmother used to make before she died. That’s all I knew about the culture.
When I arrived in Kiev, I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting myself into, but my brother Bô Brainy the IT guy had studied engineering in Europe, and as luck would have it, he knew a few people in Ukraine.
He wrote to me by e-mail, text this number, her name is Tatiana:

(Obviously the number wasn’t that, but I remember it was a weird thing I’d never seen as a number).
Sure… I’ll do it tomorrow because I have scheduled a cooking class today. Verenyky!
On my way to a suburb of Kiev for the cooking classes I found on the internet, I see that I have to take an old elevator, possibly older than my grandmother. It’s a small platform you can see down… through the holes and there’s room for only 4 people…
How do I know that? Because there were 3 Ukrainian costals with me in the elevator. We were face to face and my mouth was possibly 3 inches from his mouth because we were so close… The ride was so LONG! Not something you forget… or yes.. maybe I want to forget..
The class went well and I know now how to cook Verenyky! On my way back to my hotel, I text Tatiana.
DING*** (my special effect to say I have received a new message)
”Hey, Dis eez Tatiana, meet mee tomorrow at Arsenalna station at 21PM”, in a broken English.
…mmmhhH 9PM…. Am I going to get kidnapped?
At exactly 9.00 pm, I arrive at the metro station, and there she is with three friends. The other two don’t speak a word of English and Tatiana’s English is very broken.
All in all, we explored the city and it was great,
we went to a festival the next day and what I saw shocked me:
Lots of old men with young women barely 18-19 years old… as if it were normal..
IT’S NOT NORMAL!!
It’s a certified rage button for me.
It’s purely transactional. Old men buy youth, and young women buy financial stability, and I stress the word buy. A transaction between two parties. I find it disgusting. And it was packed like that. They go from one transaction to another without building anything with the person. They have the shiny object symptom, like a lot of internet marketers.
They jump from one online model to another without ever building anything as soon as they meet their first challenge – and it’s perfect for us, real internet marketers.
If you’re new to my email list, you’ll see that I email at a high frequency, and it’s for a very simple reason it’s to repel those who aren’t serious about succeeding online, those who will give up at the first hurdle, it works every time. I just need to punch the keyboard and write a couple words on an email to do it.. if it ain’t magic, I’m not sure what it is.
The cure is only to focus on one thing and keep pushing and don’t date girl with 30 years less than you if you are 50+.
