I’ve just booked a bowling package with children’s games for my boy Tommy’s 3rd birthday,
So I’m off to do some errands today to get everything ready When I get a text from my wife, Josy, with a picture to tell me:
LOOK AT THIS.
She tells me before sending the photo that our package has children’s meal options.
A gourmet meal:
-Hamburger
or
-Hot dog
or
-Pogo
And we need to make a choice.
The kids ask Josy: “What’s a POGO?”
YES! Huge win here.
You know your kids’ education and homeschooling worked when they don’t know what a POGO is—the stuff with a hot dog wrapped in a fried paw and eaten with ketchup. Some weirdos also use mustard.
To show them, she Googled a picture of a POGO.
And then…
What she sees…
A picture of a breakfast POGO!
What unworthy parent will give these kids a POGO breakfast to start the day? This is child abuse.
And of course, since we are Canadian, it’s maple-flavored breakfast POGO.
A cliche.
And I’m like.. wait a minute..
BRILLANT! But GROSS!
Opening a new product line is very expensive. It takes time, money and a certain amount of risk. But they decided to keep pretty much the whole product and just change the positioning… instead of being a meal for lunch or dinner… It’s now breakfast.
Those who love their product will definitely try this product, which is virtually the same… (no significant cost for the company)
They can attract new customers who didn’t have access before because they didn’t offer breakfast.
All they have to do is add a single word to their box.
POGO BREAKFAST.
Simple positioning. And it works with all products. Online, offline and digital products alike.
I have a few ideas for them to open a new market without barely changing their products. They might be interested in this.
Make POGO GREAT AGAIN.
But what about you and your product?
If you want to learn how to position your product better to increase sales, this is part of my coaching program. In fact, it’s only a small part of what the program covers.
