Today, the Daredevil movie comes out on Netflix, and it immediately made me think of a mistake many beginners make when they start online.
While I’m not a huge superhero fan like My son Tom, I do appreciate a good story and their universe. Conversely, my 3-year-old Tom is a WILD FAN of Peter Parker, aka “Spider-man”. He can’t leave the house without his Spider-Man sweater, socks, pants, cap, underwear and coat.
(My washer doesn’t really like that).
But back to Daredevil, if you’re not familiar, it’s the story of a New York lawyer who had an accident with a radioactive product when he was younger. This accident left him blind and endowed him with other superpowers.
When I started online, I had a background in marketing, as I graduated from university with a degree in marketing and worked in the field. One day, I came across a site that had web banner advertising and noticed that the banner in question wasn’t redirecting to the official site, but it was through someone’s affiliate link. In short, it’s as if an affiliate like you and me had bought an ad and put the company’s banner with our affiliate link.
I thought to myself:
Brilliant! I’m going to do this.
I contacted the site to purchase a banner as an advertisement and run exactly the same ad. I took the banner from the company’s site, put in my affiliate link and VOILÀ!
Now I have an online business!
After my ad went live, I immediately realized that… it wasn’t going to work… very few views and 0 clicks. In the end, I made $0. But the funny thing is, once my ad was finished.
Another affiliate did precisely what I did.
He took the same ad and put in his affiliate link.
How do I know this? Because there are plugins that allow you to view the redirect link and see the affiliate ID, and it wasn’t the same one I took the idea from.
I have a good idea of how much profit he made with that! A big fat zero.
Blind leading the blind.. basically.
It’s the same thing that happens on social media with all the beginners who show others how to make online sales without having succeeded in doing so themselves. Blind leading the blind. You think the person knows what they’re doing, but you’ll just end up losing your time (and money).
That doesn’t change.
