I’ll say it. I come from Canada, which has hockey as its national sport, but I HATE watching sports on TV, especially hockey.
To the extreme of my father Daniel, who knows how many goals such and such a player scored in 1957, how many Stanley Cups such and such a team has won since the beginning and everything. He’s also a big card collector.
He talks to me with stars in his eyes about Canada’s game against the Soviets in 1972 during the Cold War, with Paul Henderson’s landmark goal.
As far as I’m concerned, I’m interested in coaches’ stories. It doesn’t matter what sport. I buy all the coaches’ books on Amazon. How can one person influence people and achieve great things?
God damn, I got chills..
This was the case with Coach Herb Brooks. We saw a clip of him playing at the start of the Canada vs USA hockey game recently. A clip, because he died in a car accident. Long story short, In 1980, he led one of the greatest underdog victories in sports history. The U.S. hockey team —composed of young, inexperienced players .. all no names —was up against the seemingly invincible Soviet Union. Nobody believed they stood a chance.
But Brooks saw something the world didn’t.
He challenged them, pushed them, and transformed them into a team that refused to back down. You can watch his speech on Youtube.
“Great moments are born from great opportunity.”
..that’s how he started his speech. How can you NOT listen?
And they won against the invincible Soviet Union. A miracle, just like its book’s title.
And it got me thinking that, at the end of the day, you choose the impact you want to have on others. It can range from nothing, nada, niet, no impact, to small local impacts like the article I read about a children’s bus driver, to impacting the entire planet.
The gentleman had been a school bus driver all his life. One day, he received a letter from one of the children driving him to school 25 years ago, telling him how much his interactions with him had impacted him. He was reassuring and always in a good mood when he opened the bus door. He was the first person the kids saw before going to school. And some of them didn’t have a good time at school… so he was like a balm on their hearts.
The easy way to have more impact is to generate more income; that’s it. It’s not the only way, but it’s one because you can bring new experiences to your loved ones and the world you love.
